Good bye, Echo

January 29, 2010

No television show in recent memory has been so thought-provoking and forward-looking, in a real-Earth-future sense, as The Dollhouse. At times it waxed smarmy – but the point was more than just titillation, it was classic sci-fi exploration of what might happen when technological innovation and amorality come face to face and embrace each other.

Now the Dollhouse is gone. Few were spared, the story is over, it is time to put down the book. Return to real life. But think. Continue to think, continue to be aware, continue to push yourself to be the best a human can be rather than allowing yourself to sink to the worst.

Most inappropriately-timed commercial ever: OnStar showing how they can remotely slow down your car if it is stolen. I expect that there were an awful lot of Dollhouse fans who immediately swore never to purchase a vehicle with OnStar.

CBS Has ST:TOS In HD

September 25, 2008

Somehow it had previously escaped me (maybe its a new thing? maybe I don't pay all that much attention to stuff like this?), CBS now has episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series, remastered, in high definition. Just enjoyed Daggers of the Mind. Well, enjoyed in a way that only a sci-fi-starved non-TV watcher (usually) can. Granted it wasn't great, but at least it looked good in HD :-).

Share Some Gris Tea With Me

June 22, 2008

When I first heard Morrissey's Every Day Is Like Sunday sometime in 1991 (after moving to Dallas and being exposed to "alternative" for the first time), I was terribly confused about one of the last lines of the song: "share some gris tea with me". Of course, I originally thought it was "grease tea," which equally made no sense. When I learned to play the song on guitar, I found the lyrics and stood corrected. But not enlightened. Well, thank you French class! Now I know that gris means "grey" =).
