Beyond the Water
Number 143
February 7, 2000
Life—I will make—
A river;
Some—slowly fade—
Languorous, drifting,
Leeching moss hotly overhung—
Go on forever;
One—goes by—another bridge,
Another scene,
Maybe a gully or ditch spanned—
Or perhaps a triumphant ravine;
But I—I refuse,
To be a passing, blurring window image—
Gully, ravine, whatever...
To choke on the river weeds...
To be overwhelmed before I reach the sea—
I refuse.
